Mining professionals have access to the ability Find Minerals, which can be used to identify nearby mineral veins on the minimap. It is important to note that the tracking feature is not available through death and is required to be enabled manually.

As with all professions within World of Warcraft, the player earns points of skill when performing a specific task (crafting an item, collecting the nodes, slicing off the skin of a beast, and so on). The frequency with which the player earns these points is relative to their current level of skill.

To make Mining more efficient, it's important to understand which mineral veins will be spawning. The majority of mineral veins occur in natural environments close to hills, cliffsand mountain ranges, zone boundaries or caves and mines. Make use of this information to plan out routes in accordance with the maps via Wowhead (mentioned below). Before moving to a new zone to continue mining, be sure that your skill is adequate to locate all mineral veins that you may encounter in the region (excluding the rare minerals veins such like Gold Vein nodes).

Smelting Ore

Smelting lets you transform ore into bars. It's a different route one could take to level their Mining ability, which is particularly effective with rare ores such as Silver Ore. However, acquiring rare ores isn't very reliable, unless buying them through Auction Houses. Auction House. This method of leveling is no longer effective at the point of skill level 185.

Smelting is useful particularly for blacksmiths because a large number of recipes call for bars to make.

Mining Etiquette

Since mineral veins require multiple strikes to completely extract all of the ore, stone, and gems, many players can benefit from all of the mineral vein. This is beneficial for a party or raid as several players with Mining can earn a skill stage from one mineral. If a different player already has an mineral vein that they claim, they are effectively laying claim to it. You should not attempt to mine the same mineral vein without either asking for permission or cooperating with them. This is considered rude by in-game guidelines.

If another person is fighting within a vein, usually this means that they want to gather it after leaving combat. It's best to assist them in battle or wait until after you've finished to decide if they're planning to gather the mineral vein that you're interested in. Similarly, if another player is moving towards a mineral node, using an ability that speeds up your movement to beat them to it is considered inconsiderate.

In general, it's recommended to be friendly and cool with other players, especially when it comes to gathering professions. In most cases this will be in your favor. This etiquette also applies for Herbalism or Skinning.

Darkshore (Suggested Road Map): Darkshore would be the closest zone for Night Elf players to begin mining since Teldrassil is devoid minerals veins. Due to the vastness of the zone and its width mineral veins can be discovered on either side of the main path leading into Darkshore (by coastline or near the eastern zone mountain boundary). The southern region of the zone is home to higher level creatures, though Tin Vein nodes can be found there.

Dun Morogh (Suggested Route Map): Dun Morogh is the closest zone for Dwarf and Gnome players to start mining. Mineral veins are scattered over this zone and along the zone's mountain border and there are numerous caves which are likely to have mineral vein nodes that spawn. The Gol'Bolar Quarry, Helm's Bed Lake and the region around Kharanos tend to have reliable spawning sites as well.

Elwynn Forest (Suggested Route Map): Elwynn Forest is the closest zone for Human players. The mines tend to be able to provide reliable mineral vein node spawns, as well as the small ridges located south of the main road that runs through the zone. The coast to the southeast of Goldshire also has a few reliable spawns.

Loch Modan (Suggested Route Map): Loch Modan is the next-best zone for Dwarf and Gnome players which is a natural progression from Dun Morogh.

Westfall (Suggested route map): Westfall is the next best location for Human players and the natural progression of Elwynn Forest. There are a variety of nodes that are located along the coast, although Jangolode Mine and Gold Coast Quarry are also high-paying locations. The mine that leads into The Deadmines is also rich with mineral vein node spawns and players are able to discover in the form of Tin Vein nodes.

Durotar (Suggested routes map): Durotar is the closest area to allow Orc players to begin mining. It is the most populated zone with the highest amount of Copper Vein veins due to the abundance of hills cliffs and ridges. Just about everywhere in Durotar is a lucrative place to mine aside from The Echo Isles in the southeast.

Mulgore (Suggested Route Map): Mulgore is the closest zone to Tauren players to mine, with a relatively simple path due to its shape. The majority of nodes begin their journey along zones' borders, and there are also a few caves/mines.

Tirisfal Glades (Suggested Route Map): Tirisfal Glades is the closest zone for Undead players to start mining. The nodes that spawn in this zone tend to be located on the lower end relative to other zones like Durotar. Although nodes are found on the route suggested however, it is more favorable mining in Silverpine Forest.

The Barrens (Suggested route map) The Barrens is the second-best area to Troll, Orc, and Tauren players. Overall this zone has an abundance of nodespawns, however due to its size the nodes are more spread out. In certain areas, you are more likely to meet Tin Veins, and so Durotar or Mulgore will be better in the event that you do not have the mining level of 65.

Silverpine Forest (Suggested Route Map): Silverpine Forest is the natural progression of Tirisfal Glades. Some players might find appealing in the event that Tirisfal Glades isn't equipped with ideal node spawns.

Smelt Elementium is taught by Master Elemental Shaper Krixix in Blackwing Lair. Priests must utilize Mind Control on the Master Elemental Shaper Krixix, then target someone else who is a Mining profession and use Smelt Elementium to teach it to the person targeted. (Players with other professions can technically be taught Smelt Elementium, but cannot use it without Mining.)

Mining in the WoW Classic Ahn'Qiraj War Effort

Opening of the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj is the moment that will precede the release of the Ahn'Qiraj attack instance. In order to unlock the Gates each side has to come together and contribute large amounts of specific materials to quest givers at Ironforge (Alliance) or Orgrimmar (Horde) to finance the expedition to open these raiding instances. Many items obtained through First Aid are needed for the War Effort.
